Fernleaf Beech

Fagus sylvatica ‘Asplenifolia’ This tree is a stately and very unique cultivar of the European Beech. It is one of the most handsome varieties of Beech and one with the most variable leaf shapes. Some are long and narrow, and some are wider and deeply lobed with numerous intermediate shapes. The Fernleaf Beech turns a lustrous golden brown in the fall. Examine a branch and look for the variations. Mr. Coe planted a grove of several different kinds of Beech in this area. They were spaced far enough apart to assume their natural shape; rounded with branches sweeping to the ground.
