A Walking Tour of the Great Trees of Planting Fields Arboretum State Historic Park

Introduction

Planting Fields is a former “Gold Coast” estate. During this era, wealthy landowners like Mr. Coe collected many unusual trees to enhance their properties. Mr. Coe had a vision of collecting and displaying these trees for people to appreciate for years to come. Currently there are over 4,000 different types of plants at Planting Fields, and several are extremely rare and unusual. This guide describes some of the larger and more unique specimens . The numbered trees, list the plant’s scientific name, common name, family and country of origin. In many cases there is no origin listed because the plant is a man-made hybrid or cultivated variety.
