Main Greenhouse - Spring Display
Gardens & Grounds - Mountain Laurel, Kousa Dogwood, Rose Garden, Rose Arbor, Rose Garden at the Manor House

In June, the gardens of Planting Fields are bright with the flowering shrubs, trees, and perennials of late spring and early summer. But before the sun gets too high, stop by the MAIN GREENHOUSE. The center of the HIBISCUS HOUSE reflects the ambiance of an English spring garden with hydrangeas, foxglove, delphinium, and geraniums early in the month, later replaced with many colorful annuals.

On the upper perimeter of the conservatory you will find economic plants, including lemons, oranges, dates, bananas, coffee, and cocoa. The permanent collections of Bromeliads, Orchids, Cactus and Succulents, Ferns, Begonias and House Plants also contain many interesting and decorative displays. Be sure to stop by the GARDEN GIFT SHOP while you are here!

Turn left as you leave the greenhouses and proceed down the road past the cold frames on the left. Jog right around the Copper Beech tree, then left again on the road.

You will see the ROSE ARBOR on your right, flanked by luxuriant perennial beds. At the far end of the Arbor, on both sides, is the ROSE GARDEN, fragrant and glorious in the June sunshine.

Beyond the ROSE GARDEN on the right is Mrs. Coe’s Tea House overlooking the ITALIAN BLUE POOL GARDEN which is currently being restored. North of the BLUE POOL, you will see COE HALL, a formidable structure of Elizabethan Tudor design, built from 1918 to 1921 of Indiana

limestone. The house is open for tours from April 1st to September 30 from 12:30 to 3:30, seven days a week. Take a walk around the house and admire the great vistas of lawn and the very large trees: different kinds of Beech, Tulip, Linden, Golden English Elm, Atlas Blue Cedar, and many others that are the pride of Planting Fields.

The SYNOPTIC GARDEN to the east of COE HALL, has an abundance of flowering trees and shrubs, plus a collection of shade-loving perennials along its woodland paths. It was developed in the 1960’s to showcase the best ornamental trees and shrubs that will grow on Long Island. It’s five acres are not only an innovative idea in garden design, but also a delight to the eye in artistic arrangement. Maintained mostly by volunteers under the direction of a dedicated staff member, it is tenderly pampered and pruned for the public. Many new plantings have been installed over the past two years and we now have about 500 different plants in this garden. Be sure and look for the Kousa Dogwood, Cornus kousa, Royal Purple Smoke Bush, Cotinus coggygria, Bottlebrush Buckeye, Aesculus parviflora, Summersweet Clethra, Clethra alnifolia, Mountain Laurel, Kalmia latifolia, and Carolina Allspice, Calycanthus floridus. The plants are arranged in alphabetical order by scientific name, beginning at the entrance to the garden on BEECH DRIVE.

Beyond the SYNOPTIC GARDEN, you will find the large late flowering species of rhododendrons, the DWARF CONIFER GARDEN, the HOLLY WALK, the CONIFER TRAIL, and the HEATHER GARDEN. All of them are well worth exploring in June or any other time. Come back at different times throughout the year to see how these gardens have changed and developed.
