Executive Director
Planting Fields Foundation, a not-for-profit corporation located in Oyster Bay, New York, is seeking an Executive Director. The mission of the Foundation is “to preserve and interpret Planting Fields Arboretum State Historic Park as the premier Long Island public garden and intact Gold Coast estate for today and tomorrow by educating, enriching and entertaining the visiting public.”
The Executive Director reports to the Planting Fields Foundation Board of Trustees and works collaboratively with the New York State staff of Planting Fields Arboretum State Historic Park to preserve, enhance and interpret the site, and is responsible for developing, overseeing and managing all strategic planning, administrative, financial and fundraising activities designed to enhance the Foundation’s mission. Additionally, the Executive Director is responsible for guiding the Foundation staff to ensure that each person realizes his/her potential in working to achieve the mission and goals.
A candidate should have an undergraduate degree in the arts, business, the humanities, museum studies, preservation or horticulture. Having an advanced degree in one or more of these areas, having authored articles and/or books, and/or having lectured in these fields is a plus. Being computer literate is required.
The ideal candidate must have:
- More than 6 years of experience leading a not-for-profit organization and the proven ability to develop and execute an annual and long-range operating strategy.
- Knowledge of all current and pending regulations that govern not-for-profit organizations, as well as a working knowledge of collection, archive and preservation guidelines and Life Safety Code Regulations.
- The ability to interface with the Foundation’s Board of Trustees, community leaders and the media.
- The ability to work with the Board of Trustees and the staff to develop fundraising initiatives designed to garner support from various sectors.
- Excellent verbal and written skills.
- The ability to deliver comments and talks to various audiences.
- Evidence of initiating creative approaches and solutions to challenges.
- Experience in working with other not-for-profit organizations, plus professional, educational and community groups to broaden the reach of Planting Fields and to generate greater participation in its programs and activities.
- The ability to develop, maintain and update comprehensive branding, communications, advertising and marketing strategy.
