Discover the Camellia House at Planting Fields!

Join Sustainability Coordinator Rebecca Slagle and Michael D. Coe Archivist Marie Penny to explore over 200 blooming camellias, the historic planthouse designed by the Olmsted Brothers, and the fire that once threatened this treasured collection. Learn camellia-growing traditions, see modern hardy varieties outdoors, and get tips for your own garden.

Winter Break Youth Workshop: Backyard Birders Monday, Feb. 16, 2025 10am – 12pm $25 per child Check-In Location: The Education Center This workshop is for ages 6 – 12 and will take place at the Education Center, on the Grounds, and at the Bird Sanctuary.     Join us for an engaging, nature-focused workshop designed to introduce young explorers to the remarkable birds that call Long Island home in the winter. Students will explore native winter birds, including loons, barred owls, and turkey vultures. Creative Spirits: The Story of the Camellia House

This special daytime edition of Creative Spirits invites you to experience one of the most spectacular sights of the season: the breathtaking winter display of hundreds of camellias in full bloom inside the historic Camellia House at Planting Fields. During a private half-hour reserved exclusively for this program, guests may wander through a dazzling array of colors, forms, and varieties at their own pace.

Following their self-guided greenhouse stroll, attendees will gather in the Main House’s Great Hall for an engaging presentation by internationally renowned horticulturist and Planting Fields Arboretum Director, Vincent Simeone. Guests can enjoy a tea-based signature drink while learning from Vincent’s deep expertise on the history, cultivation, and artistry of camellias, flowers celebrated worldwide for their elegance and enduring charm.

Part of our Creative Spirits series, this unique daytime program offers a rare opportunity to immerse yourself in a world-class collection while hearing directly from one of the region’s foremost experts.

2026 Junior Ranger Summer Camp (Ages 5 – 8)

The ultimate summer outdoor adventure at Planting Fields returns July 2026!

Campers will dive into nature-based play, creative arts and crafts, and sensory activities that spark curiosity and a love of the outdoors. They’ll explore gardens and woodlands, connect with plants and animals, and learn simple ways to care for nature—all while having fun, building confidence, and discovering the joy of the natural world.
